Airlangga University, which was founded in 1954, originally had five faculties, including the Faculty of Letters based in Denpasar, Bali. However, in 1962, the faculty separated from Airlangga University Surabaya. Meanwhile, the determination to have a Faculty of Letters at Universitas Airlangga is still firmly entrenched among some academics. Dr. Ma’rifin Husin, dr., M.A., who was then Vice Chancellor IV Universitas Airlangga, asked Maartni Biran, Dra. to pave the way for realizing that determination. As the embryo, a Language Laboratory was established in 1975 which has the main task of managing the teaching of English for Airlangga University students. The next step, among others, is to complete the hardware (hardware), and software (software), as well as the Language Laboratory.
In connection with the development of the study of Literature and History which leads to cultural studies accompanied by the number of students taking the theme of the thesis with the theme of Cultural Studies and the core science of Literature and History which is more appropriate as a study of Literature and Culture, the Faculty of Letters changed its name became the Faculty of Humanities (FIB) Universitas Airlangga BHMN with the Rector’s Decree No. 3292/J03/OT/2008 dated April 10, 2008. The change in the name of the faculty was adapted to the desire to facilitate, expand, and develop multidisciplinary scientific studies in the realm of the study of cultural sciences (humanities). The name change has also been adjusted to the direction of the development of Universitas Airlangga BHMN in the form of developing two superior towers in the field of science, namely the health sciences and social-humanities sciences towers.
In 2010 according to the Decree of the Chancellor of Airlangga University number: 08/H3/KR/2010, dated January 4, 2010, the Masters Program in Literary and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Airlangga University was established. In 2013 the Master Program in Linguistics, Faculty of Humanities, Airlangga University was also opened.
