Prof. Diah Ariani Arimbi, S.S., M.A., Ph.D.
Welcome to the Doctoral Program in Humanities at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Airlangga
The Doctoral Program (S3) was established by Rector’s Decree No. 69/UN3/2023, dated February 20, 2023, and began admitting new students in the Even Semester of the 2023/2024 academic year.
In alignment with the program’s vision and mission, the Doctoral Program in Humanities aims to enhance the professionalism of human resources and the quality of humanities scholarship, which is expected to contribute to improving societal welfare through a humanities-centered approach.
The Doctoral Program in Humanities at the Faculty of Humanities offers a distinctive, engaging, and cutting-edge pathway for advanced interdisciplinary research and training. It spans various research areas and/or relevant practices across a range of disciplines in the social sciences, humanities, economics, politics, and arts, as well as in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
One of the flagship features and core strengths of this program is Digital Humanities. This focus encourages rethinking constructions of race, gender, class, sexuality, and nation within the program’s four specializations: Literature, Cultural Studies, Linguistics, and History. This innovative research theme represents the best of digital humanities: digital and critical, inclusive and connected. Digital Humanities also critically examines the promises of digital technology, exploring the most essential and pressing questions in the humanities. This inclusive theme is interdisciplinary in nature, crossing boundaries between literary studies, film studies, historical studies, communication studies, media and information studies, and technology.
Based at the Faculty of Humanities, doctoral students in Humanities benefit from a dynamic and collaborative environment that fosters innovation and cross-disciplinary engagement. Universitas Airlangga has a long-standing tradition of interdisciplinary research. Doctoral students in Humanities, along with their supervisors, form an integral part of the faculty’s network, laboratories, studios, and research centers. This includes seven research groups: (1) Language, Media, and Technology, (2) Border, Mobility, and Regional Connectivity, (3) Urban Studies, (4) Religion, Multiculturalism, and Globalization, (5) Contemporary Literature, (6) Local Traditions and Manuscripts, and (7) Gender.
We warmly welcome inquiries from prospective doctoral students interested in exploring how their academic interests align with our program. We look forward to welcoming you to the Doctoral Program in Humanities year-round and, most importantly, invite you to join us in research, creation, and exploration of the humanities of the future.
