The recent advancement of information technology has implications for the rapid development of social, cultural, economic, and business spheres. These developments require skilled individuals for competition. Skilled and competitive individuals will later be able to use the information technology to enhance the mastery of science, technology, and arts, and thus to benefit the society in this modern era.
In achieving Universitas Airlangga’s motto, “Excellence with Morality”, the bachelor program in English, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Airlangga has a vision to produce skilled and high quality graduates equipped with good softskills. The curriculum implemented to achieve the goal above is based on the Indonesian Qualification Framework from which the graduate’s learning outcomes are specified. The bachelor program in English has three majors: linguistics, literature, and cultural studies. These majors are designed to prepare the graduates with proficient English skills and sufficient analytical skills related to studies of linguistics, literature, and culture. The graduates are also expected to have excellent softskills, such as being independent, creative, able to work as a team, and other positive attitudes required in workplace.
In addition to the skills and competence, the graduates are also equipped with several practical knowledge and skills. Thus, the bachelor program in English offers some practical and applied courses, such as Business Correspondence, Introduction to Public Relations, Interpreting, Translation for General Purposes, Introduction to Media Studies, Introduction to Film Studies, Enterpreneurship, Computer-Assisted Language Learning, Teaching Engllish as a Foreign Language, etc. These courses are aimed at boosting the competitiveness of the graduates so that they can be accepted in workplaces particularly those related to media/jurnalism, tourism business, information business, government organizations, and both national and multinational corporations.
